Eye Checkup

updated by mommy..

Sent Darren for his eye checkup this afternoon. Was supposed to bring along Isabel too but she was having a mild fever yesterday, so the nurse said they cannot sedate her. I was kind of relieve too as I am still feeling very uncomfortable with the sedation. So, we leave Isabel at home and I bring Darren for his eye checkup on my own.

We left for the hospital after picking him up from school. So happened my car was having some problem and I left my car at the workshop and my sister sent us there. We arrived the hospital around 12.30pm and straight we went to the eye centre.

The 2 nurses were very kind. They waited for us to help me put the eye drops for Darren before having their lunch. It was not easy as Darren was having great phobia with the eye drops. He was struggling so much and we basically have to "force" him down and applied the eye drops. He kicked all the bags down and he even accidently scratched me at my chest area, left me with a red dark scratch mark. The nurses was asking Darren to see what he has done on me but I told him that I did not blame him and assure to him that mommy was ok because I know he did not do it on purpose. He answered me,

"Sorry mommy..I was very very very very scared just now."

My heart ache when I heard him said that. I felt so sorry for him that he has to go through such trauma to get the eye drops in. I hug him very tight and I just want to protect him anyway I can.

After applying 3x each on each eye, we went for lunch. I bought him his favourite nyonya kuih and a packet of "Rocky" for him. Then we walked back to eye centre and the nurse checked on his eye again. We waited for another 20 minutes for his pupils to get fully dialated.

The optometrist then took his power. Results was his vision has improved A LOT. It was a piece of good news. Previously he can only read like 3 rows from the top and his left eye was bad. But now, he still has another 2 to 3 line to be be considered as "normal". His visual accuty now is 6/10 for both his eyes. However, his right eye power has increased from 750 to 800 and left eyes has increased from 800 to 825.

When I asked the eye specialist why his power increased, they explained to me that it is not his power that increased but it was because he has been wearing his glasses for 8 months and his eye muscles are more relax now, hence more power is being "released" out.

The eye specialist suggested that he still continue his 1 hr eye patching daily. The next appointment will be another 3 months time to check on his new glasses.

We were looking for a new pair of spectacle frame for him as the existing one was a bit too big for his face. I was looking for a round shape one as it was recommended by the doctor. But it was not easy to get a round one plastic frame. We need a plastic frame too because it will hold his "thick" lenses better compared to metal one.

Finally we got the "nearest" one for him and will be collecting it only next week.

Poor Darren. BUt he was so sweet saying sorry to you and can express his fear so well.

Glad that his eyes are getting better...although the power has gone up. Looking forward to seeing him in his new specs. :)
